Like an extraterrestrial, organic entity that arrives at a dialogue with the singularity of its surroundings, the Ghost Orchid is a large, almost 4-metre-tall sculpture 3D-printed with translucent, cloud-like biodegradable PLA. The Orchid Series defines Marcin’s introspective attempt to understand the past and to find a missing link that would reconnect him to his late maternal grandfather, an orchid breeder and a vital character in the family’s flower-growing saga. Morphing and “hacking” new orchid hybrids inhabiting the digital world, we search for answers to the questions that we imagined Marcin’s grandfather would ask himself as well: when and how do you decide if the experiment is fruitfully concluded? When do you decide that the imaginary should become real, materialised? And how do you engage with things that you thought were impossible to find in real life? The result underlines the interplay between nature and culture, the real and the surreal, the tangible – and the imaginary.
